Coarse fishing improves in Cavan area

Alice Murtagh reports on coarse fishing in the Cavan area.


Fishing in the Cavan area has improved in the last few weeks with good Tench showing at some venues. Late night fishing on Sally Lake is giving good bags of fish while Flynn’s Pass is reported to be fishing well. Plenty of small Roach are being caught on the river at Belturbet. There are reports of good catches of Tench in the Belturbet and Killeshandra area  also.


The number of Pike anglers are up on previous years with reports of good Pike being caught. A 33lbs pike was reported in the Cootehill area in recent days.


A Junior Pike angling competition took place on Lough Gowna recently with 9 boats. 19 children took part. Heaviest fish on the day was caught by Oisin Reilly weighing 12lb 10ozs. The winners on the day were Ben Brady and Oisin Reilly. The Bernard Kiernan Memorial competition also took place on Lough Gowna in recent weeks. 14 boats entered the competition. The winner on the day was Mick Dalton with David Roache coming in second. David Roache caught the heaviest fish at 15lb 9ozs.
