Results for the Cavan CAC winter league finals

April 30th, 2013 | by

Derek Gibbons reports on last weekend’s matches…

Cavan Coarse Angling Club fished the last match of their 2012/13 winter league yesterday on Lough Oughter. It was a cold day with a biting northerly wind, but we managed to find a sheltered spot and had the wind off our backs for the majority of the day. Some of us even got a slight facial tan with the sun beating down for most of the day, so it made it quite pleasant. The cold did put pay to any good bags however, with 2kg 450 grms being the best weight on the day. One angler (Peadar Harten) managed to hook and land a 6lb+ pike on double red maggot and took him 20 minutes to land on his canal pole rig! It was weighed and released unharmed.

The league was a tight run affair this time around. Two anglers could have taken overall first place in the senior and junior divisions on the final day. Results of the days match were as follows.

Derek Gibbons

Derek Gibbons was the overall senior winner

  • 1st Derek Gibbons – 2 kilo 450 grms
  • 2nd Darren Bayliss – 2 kilo 200 grms
  • 3rd Peadar Harten – 1 kilo 700 grms

With those results, the overall lead changed on the final table. The final standings of the 2012/2013 season are:

  • Winner: Derek Gibbons
  • Second: Tony Swift
  • Third: Peadar Harten

Junior league winners were:

  • Winner: Conor McGarry
  • Second: Josh Kavanagh
Conor McGarry

Conor McGarry was overall junior winner

Josh Kavanagh

Josh Kavanagh took 2nd place in the junior competition

I’d like to congratulate everybody on taking part. It was a tough end to the league as the past few months have been very hard for fishing, with biting winds, freezing conditions and flooded venues. I hope we see an improvement in our weather soon.

We will be running our league again later this year and into 2014, but will be starting it much earlier, to avail of better fishing for at least 3 months of this year. We also hope to run a few Open matches. Details of which will be posted on our club website and also on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/cavan.cac)
