Irish Angling Update – 29/01/15

January 29th, 2015 | by

The wintry weather is back in force this week here in Ireland but in the days before that, fishing activity was very good with the salmon reported from Lough Currane and the River Drowes in Donegal at last.  Coarse anglers were also out on many venues last weekend recording bumper catches.

Duncan Lennox, 38kilo Upper Dam

Duncan Lennox, wins Catch of the Week for this great haul from the upper Dam on Inniscarra Reservoir

The Polish Pole, Catch and Release club held a match in their spring league near the marina on the River Barrow at Athy and the competitors had great catches of roach along with some very nice bream.  Young anglers from the Killanarden Angling Initiative had a great day on the River Barrow at Athy on Saturday catching mainly roach. On a canal section of the River Barrow near Athy, the Daingean Match Anglers has a great day with massive catches of fish.  Shane Dunne, Galway won the day with a tremendous catch of 82.13 lb. of roach and hybrids from Naas angler Jimmy Kelly with 67 lb. 2 oz.!  Not to be outdone however, anglers from the Inniscarra Lake TDL had tremendous fishing in the upper lake with Cork angler Duncan Lennox winning a match with 38 Kilos (83 lb. 12 oz.) of mainly roach to win the Catch of the Week with second place going to Trevor Platt with 36 Kilos! The Munster CAC anglers had a tougher time at the forth leg of their winter league on the River Shannon at O’Brien’s Bridge. Despite the big flood Richard Bedford won the day with a nice catch of mainly roach for 11 lb. 11 oz. A notable weight given the adverse conditions.

“In recent weeks there has been a lot of negative comment that our coarse fish stocks in Ireland have all been wiped out by certain anglers online here in Ireland.  For the middle of winter, the catches from the many venues this week show we have quality wild coarse fishing on waters available all around Ireland!” – Paul Bourke.

To cap it all this week, at one of the few man made carp lakes in Ireland at Oaklands near New Ross, the first match of the year produced a massive match weight of 190 lb. for former Irish International angler Damien Maddock from Dublin followed by more terrific catches for competitors.

There was only a couple of pike reports this week including some good pike fishing for angling guide Michael Flanagan and other pike anglers in the midlands.  Brian McCall reports on the piking in Co. Clare where  fishing from Kayaks is producing some lovely pike along with nice perch

At long last it is nice to report some nice salmon fishing with the best fish of 17 lb. 7 oz. for long time ghillie Brod Sullivan to kick of season off with the first salmon of the year from Lough Currane taken on the troll to win the Paddy Carey Memorial Cup. Up in Donegal, the first salmon of the year of 7 lb. 7 oz. from the River Drowes was landed by Brian McClintock from Enniskillen on a yellow mepps. Anglers are anxiously waiting for the first of February next week to fish for salmon on the Cork Blackwater and Delphi and many other waters around Ireland.  A full list is available on our website.

On the sea angling side, Brian McCall  (once more) reports that kayak anglers have been getting out on many stretches of our coasts last weekend to land whiting, bullhuss and codling at many venues from Kerry to Wexford.  Stephen O’Sullivan from Galway SAC won the first leg West Coast Shore League with 10 dogfish. UK Anglers took top honours at the 27th Irish Winter Shore Angling Festival held on beaches in North Wexford where flounders dominated catches.

As always there are plenty of News clippings and competition notices in other news in this week’s angling update.  The weather is a good bit harsher going into this weekend but some hardy anglers will be out fishing, keen to sample our great wild fishing.  Be careful out there and watch the weather reports carefully before going out this weekend,

Tight lines especially in Ireland,

Paul Bourke
