Salmon Watch Ireland hosting a half-day conference in Salthill Hotel, Galway on Saturday 11th October 2014

Combatting the impact of climate change on salmon stocks’Salmon Watch Ireland is hosting a half-day conference on the measures that can be taken on individual river systems to mitigate the impact of climate change on salmon stocks. The multiple effects of climate change, in both the marine and fresh water environments, are now widely accepted as presenting the greatest challenge to the future of salmonids.

Atlantic Salmon Trust LogoThe conference will focus on measures that need to be taken in the freshwater environment to make our rivers more effective in the production of more and stronger smolts.The conference will be held at the Salthill Hotel, Galway from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm on Saturday, 11 October 2014.The speakers are: Dr Ted Potter, CEFAS (UK) – ‘The threats to salmonids resulting from climate change’ Dr Martin O’Grady, IFI – ‘How Irish river managers are responding to climate change’ Simon Ashe, Ballynahinch Castle – ‘What the Ballynahinch system is doing to cope with climate change’.There will be ample opportunity for questions and discussion built into the programme.Attendance at the conference is free but it would be appreciated if those intending to come along would notify us at Wemyss.bob@gmail.com as soon as possible.
