Jacks only for Tullamore anglers on Grand Canal

October 31st, 2017 | by

Patrick Foran reports that Tullamore and District Angling Club held a Pike competition on Sunday 29th October. The 14 anglers who fished the Grand Canal event reported challenging conditions.

The day was mild but a flat calm made the fishing difficult to most anglers, and the canal had a muddy colour in the water. Not great but it didn’t stop the all the pike from feeding.

Most of the anglers reported that between 10.am/11.30am the fish were feeding well and there was a lot of jack pike being caught. As the day proceeded the fishing started to quiet down but in the last hour between 3pm and 4pm the fish came on the feed again. Unfortunately, there were no large pike caught and biggest was 6lb.

The most productive method was float fished dead baits, fished just short of full depth so the bait was suspended from the bottom. Most productive bait reported was smelt.

In total there was 41 pike weighed and safely released.

Results were:

  • 1st Charlie Lawlor
  • 2nd John Molyneaux
  • 3rd Seamus Hogan
  • 4th Eugene Cahill,

Stephanie Lawlor won the junior prize
