Perch mania setting in on Ennell and Derravaragh

December 21st, 2017 | by

Mick Flanagan reports that the milder weather of recent days made perch seem like a good idea…

We had a bit of a change mid week, and the cold spell lifted leaving it a bit more comfortable to spend a few hours Perch fishing. When out on the likes of Ennell and Derravaragh in just a 19ft fiberglass boat you are certainly at the mercy of the elements. Derravaragh was tough going, and even though I was on top of shoal fish they simply would not feed.

On Sunday Marty Smith was back over for his last trip of the 2017 season, and we were keeping a good eye on the weather. Luck would have it the temperature rose a bit, and we had just a slight breeze on Ennell. It was not all plain sailing and at times we had to do some long drifts before meeting feeding perch. The perch were tightly packed, but once you came across them it was very exciting fishing. We easily had 30 plus perch, and the number of fish we dropped is uncountable. We also kept some  dead bait out all day long hoping for a pike, but never got a sniff.
