November 15th, 2017 | by

Patrick Foran from Tullamore and District Angling Club report’s on their latest trip to the Grand Canal…

Tullamore and District Angling Club held their most recent pike angling competition on the Grand canal on 12/11/17.  11 anglers fished and only 10 pike were caught on the day.

The recent rainfall that has prevented many clubs around the country from fishing the rivers has also affected the canal, as the increase in freshwater affected the clarity of the canal and turned many pike off feeding.

The anglers fished hard from first casts at 10 am until 4 pm and anglers reported that many pike were lost due to pike dropping the dead bait’s and not feeding with confidence. There was a nice wind on the canal of around 17km/h which the anglers were glad to see as the wind usually gets the fish feeding.

The conclusive results were:

  • 1st Patrick Foran (4 Pike + 11lb 10oz)
  • 2nd Charlie Lawlor (3 Pike + 5lb 4oz)
  • 3rd Eugene Cahill (1 Pike +3lb 7oz)
  • 4th Francis Tyrell (1 Pike + 2lb 1oz)

The junior prize was given to young John James Mulligan. Who was fishing his first ever pike competition but is no stranger to angling as he has fished for a few summers with the junior coarse angling league, that the club holds from June to August.

The heaviest pike on the day was Pat Foran’s 6lb 4oz jack.

The most productive method on the day was spinning very bright colored lures, the blue mike the pike lure from Westin caught the largest pike on the day and the 3d line through roach caught many of the smaller pike.

Some anglers choose to fish float fished oily sea baits such as the half mackerel in the hope for a good fish but as the results show this method didn’t produce the goods but instead produced a few lost pike.
