Drought on the Owenea, small floods and small catches

July 25th, 2018 | by

Monday 2nd June  to Sunday 22nd July 2018 (3 weeks).

The drought continued over the 3 weeks with record low water levels until a small flood of 0.24m on the 20th which gave a level of 0.10m for the following 2 days. The gauge average over the 3 weeks read a pitiful 0.0 6meters! Hard times for salmon anglers! There was a certain amount of rain but this did not equate to floods with the land being so dry and absorbing all rain that fell for the greater part. The fishery was understandably very quiet with only 17 rods fishing over the 3 weeks. Any catches reported were mostly of fresh finnock caught in the pools at the bottom of the river. There were a few grilse recorded however. On the 17th, Pierre Rumeau recorded a 3lb grilse caught & released on a fly from beat 9 and Alan Watson accounted for a 3lb grilse caught & released on a fly from beat 8. On the 18th, Pierre reported a 3¼lb grilse caught & released on a fly from beat 9. On the 20th, during the small flood, Alan Watson recorded a 4lb grilse caught & released on a fly from beat 9. We await decent rainfall.
