Galway Fishery seeing fresh fish and first grilse

May 17th, 2018 | by

Fishing has been relatively slow in Galway this spring, with high water levels predominating up to this week and making conditions difficult. Some good days have been had with up to 5 fish landed, but overall the spring run appears down on previous years. A few grilse are now appearing in catches, averaging 4lbs so far, so hopefully runs pick up this week and we have a good summer. Shrimp and spinner has dominated the catch, with water levels not really suitable for fly anglers. Damien Nolan had the only fish taken on fly, a lovely 10lbs spring fish.

Among the anglers to score over the last 2 weeks were Jim Stafford, with a 6.5lbs fish taken on shrimp, Simon Lenihan landed fish of 5 and 9lbs on shrimp on different days, while Paul Wymes had an 11lbs fish on shrimp. James Dunne, Brendan Doyle, Peadar Duffy and Martin Kiely all had grilse, while regular French visitor Jean le Moal had two. Sean O’Toole landed fish of 9 and 11lbs on one morning, while Fergal Cormican also had two fish for his visit, at 8 and 10lbs. US visitor Tony Zeminski landed his first salmon in Galway, a nice 6.5lbs fish.
