February 23rd, 2016 | by

Shane Gallagher reports on more fine salmon from the Drowes:

Yesterday marks the second full moon of the new year, bringing large tides between now and the weekend. Water levels have dropped to 0.764 metres on the gauge. On Friday Richard Todd opened his 2016 account with a 7lbs fish on black flying c from the Stone Ditch.

Yesterday, Johnny B had the first fly caught fish from the river of the new season. The 8.5lbs sea liced fish took a gold bodied Willie Gunn size 8 double, tied by Tony Mc Cabe at the tail of the Crooked Hole. The forecast is for generally dry and cold conditions for the coming week so water levels should continue to drop.

The Drowes Fishery is one of Ireland’s premier spring salmon and grilse fisheries. The Drowes is among the earliest opening salmon fisheries in the country and regularly claims the honour of producing Ireland’s first salmon of the season on opening day, January 1st. The river is some 5 miles in length, with over 70 named pools, flowing from Lough Melvin at Lareen Bay and entering the sea at Tullaghan, just outside Bundoran. The Drowes has a wide variety of water suitable for all fishing methods, including several miles of good fly water and deeper slower moving pools suitable for spinning and bait fishing.
