The Drowes looks ahead to opening day

December 31st, 2015 | by

Shane Gallagher reports from Drowes Fishery yesterday:

With less than 36 hours to go until the start of salmon season 2016 water levels are on the rise following storm Frank. The gauge at the Four Masters’ bridge is now showing 0.912 metres. The water had been coloured this morning following very strong winds and heavy rain overnight, but is now running clear.
The outlook for tomorrow, New Years Eve and for Opening Day on Friday is for colder conditions, with wintry showers tomorrow but mainly dry, windy conditions to late afternoon on Friday.

The Four Masters’ Bridge remains closed. Traffic approaching the fishery from the south should take the R280 towards Kinlough, taking a left turn before Lennox’s Bridge followed by a right, signposted Four Masters’ Memorial.
The bridge is also closed for pedestrian access as its condition has been deemed dangerous.

The tackle shop will be open tomorrow, New Year’s Eve from 9am to 5pm and from 6am on New Year’s morning.

A GoPro 4 Session is the prize for the first salmon of the season on the Drowes to be caught and released. This is part of the ongoing “Knock the priest on the head, bring a camera instead” incentive to encourage the preservation of spring stocks. Releases must be verified, with photo/video. T&Cs apply.
