Bass, Flounder, Coalies, Dogfish and Rockling at Youghal for West Cork anglers

April 26th, 2018 | by

Terry O Donovan, West Cork and District SAC, reports on their latest match fished on the Slob bank…

21 April: It’s been a long 10 weeks since our last club comp and with the first sign of sunshine after an extra long winter, spirits were high as we drew our pegs and made the walk on the Slob.

With a big string of pots 100 yards off the bank we were forced to keep the pegs towards the town side of things. From the off the best of the fishing was up that side. JP Molloy and James Kiniry were into fish from the straight away. Joycey and Mark O Sullivan were making early gains also. Fishing at the bridge end was far from spectacular with 1 fish caught between 5 anglers in the first 2 hours.

Sod on peg 3 had everyone warned to be ready for 8.30 to arrive as he foretold a flurry of fish at that time, and true to his word at 8.31pm SOD produced his first fish of the evening!!

Another local Youghal resident was keeping a close eye on us all evening. A lovely otter cruised up and down the bank looking to help himself to any fish we had to offer.

As the last hour came JP was finding some good fish, even putting a dogfish on the card to score high points. James, Sully and Joycey also found fish.

In the end there were 32 fish caught between 9 anglers and catches were made up of Bass, Flounder, Coalie, Dogfish and Rockling.

After the tally it was JP who was the man of the night with 11 fish and he also had the biggest fish, a 36cm Flounder. A massive well done to JP.
