Surf, fish and weed at Garrylucas

January 29th, 2018 | by

Terry O Donovan reports on the Garrylucas match fished by West Cork and District SAC on 20 January 2018…

The 2018 season began last Saturday in Garrylucas with 11 anglers making the trip to the West Cork beach. We have been unfortunate with Garrylucas in past years in terms of bad weather and weed making the beach un-fishable but with the weather gods playing ball this year we were it back after two years of bad luck with this venue.

First comp getting underway all the lad setting up

Garrylucas this time last year

It was good to see some familiar faces on the beach and some new ones as well. A massive welcome to Colin O Sullivan who has just joined the club and made the trip to Garrylucas with us.

Fishing began at 5pm and with lovely little surf rolled with some colour in the water hopes were high. Derek found a flat fish first cast and most of the others just found weed and heavy currents and would remain that way for the night. JP Molloy on peg no8 put a few early fish on his card as did Derek and Sod.

The heavy current and weed were an issue all along the beach with rods being pulled from the stands all night and poor Killian loosing his rod to the sea, never to be found again! A total of 62 fish were caught and catches made up of rockling, coalie, flounder, whiting, codling and dogfish. At end of the night it was JP Molloy who had 13 fish to win the match. A massive well done to Jp.

1st. JP Molloy 13 fish
2nd. Derek Kenrick 11 fish
3rd. Stephen SOD O Donovan 11 fish
4th Barry O Rourke
5th Terry O Donovan
6th Denis Duggan
7th Colin O Sullivan
8th Denis Morley
9th Graham Flanagan
10th Gearoid McCarthy
11th Killian Murphy.

Biggest fish went to JP Molloy for a 32cm coalie. Well done to JP.
