West Cork anglers make most of the fishing at east Cork venue

Terry O Donovan reports on the West Cork and District SAC match at Ballinwilling on Saturday…

Ballinwilling

Ballinwilling

First of all we would like to say a huge welcome to our two new members Mark and Denis who made the trip to East Cork to fish with us and also welcome back to some familiar faces from past seasons, James Kiniry and SOD.

Another mishap with the weather saw the back up venue being brought into play, with Ballybranigan having been the original venue but having come out a bit worse for wear from recent storms was unfishable. Ballinwilling was the back up venue and 16 anglers turned out for check in and we were greeted by perfect conditions. A cold off shore breeze with some colour in the water and no weed.

Fishing started at 6pm and it was patchy from the off with anglers struggling to find any rhythm to their catches. Rory on the end peg put some good numbers on his card in the first 2 hours with Derek hot on his heels. New member Mark certainly wasn’t showing signs of shyness by getting straight down to business putting double figures on his score card. Oskar was also into the swing of things from the off in the middle of the beach. In the last hour SOD had found some numbers and put some double shots on his card that would see him do well.

Biggest fish went to Danny O Riordan for a 72cm Painted Ray

As the final whistle went and lines were reeled in the early lead that Rory had enjoyed had been eaten into by Derek and it finished very close with not even an undersize fish between them.
A huge well done to Derek!
