Wicklow’s last Hurrah! More spurs and bullhuss on last trip of the 2012

December 20th, 2012 | by

Wicklow Boat Charters skipper Kit Dunne reports on his latest and possibly his last trip of 2012 when he bagged a few spurdogs and bullhuss. Kit is still chasing the elusive spurdog and took to deeper water in medium tides and fair weather. The tides weren’t ideal but everyone takes what opportunities they get with weather this time of year.

The target fish for Brian, Spurdog, small but still a Spur!

Having had some very productive days throughout October and November Kit set off to one known hot spot with a plan to sit right in the deepest part of the channel, 50m. It wasn’t going to be easy but he was determined and prepared, with a bucket of 2.75lb bell leads at the ready.

The group drifted for a time as they waited for the tide to slow.  Drifting wasn’t to produce any spurs, however Kit was more optimistic about the anchor fishing. He believes you need a lot of luck and/or a lot of fish around to catch on the drift, where as the anchor fishing should bring the fish to you with a scent trail out. Anyway, they set the anchor and fished hard with big baits. Tide was running hard and a 2.75lb bell lead was necessary – hard work believe me (and the anglers reeling them in!). They fished on as tide eased slightl. The first spurdog showed, not massive at about 10lb but a spur none the less. Time passed and a few dogs showed; one fine bullhuss for Brian and then another spur or two. They got a few spurs and a few bullhuss thrown in between, but no big ones to register specimen weight.

Brian Cooke bagged one of the 3 fine Huss, hard work in 50M of water.

A few were tagged and released and though they hoped for more big ones, but that wasn’t to be. As Kit said “No specimen fish this time but hey, I cant complain, the specimens didn’t let us down at all this year.We had some great results throughout June on Smooth-Hounds, it only got better in July and continued through August and September.
We also had our first length based specimen Tope and rolled into some cracking specimen Spurdogs from the start of October.
Looking forward to some more in 2013, seasons greetings and tight lines to you all.”
