A look back at trout fishing season on the Rywater

September 26th, 2013 | by

Rob Love reviews the season on the Rywater…

With the season now drawing to a close on the Rye Water, perhaps its time to reflect on a year which saw some very challenging conditions for visiting anglers.  Water levels were low throughout the season and the river was clear as the proverbial gin.  Despite the challenging conditions quite a number of cracking fish were returned – especially earlier in the season and on those warm sultry nights we had in July when the Sedge was out in force.

Several days stand out – Philip McAteer fishing on the lower end of the estate on a bitterly cold day in March had amongst others 3 fish of over 1lb despite a steady mix of sleet and snow.

On another occasion an American angler fishing the river in early May absolutely blew me away with his skill in fishing tight corners with a nymph, I was beginning to wonder who was guiding who as he took trout after trout from the most difficult of lies – his day culminating with a fantastic fish just shy of 5lb.

While there are still a few days remaining before the season closes I must take time to say thank you to the anglers who visited this rather special river.  It reopens on the 1st March and I for one can’t wait.

Go fishing…

Tickets / permits should be purchased at the hotel main reception prior to fishing.  Parking is at the boathouse on the lake.  Please respect the wishes of golfers and stay off greens and Tee areas as they can become badly cut up when fishing activity takes place on them.

A day permit is €50.  Anglers should note that this means they can fish for brown trout on the Rye Lake, brown trout on the Rye Water and rainbow trout on the Sheet of Water (all fly only) in this timeframe – so if one is not working the other might.
