Good fishing reported on Lough O’Flynn ahead of Donnellan Cup

Joe Fitzharris sent in this angling return for Lough O’Flynn in West Roscommon for last week.

  • David Castle 4 fish, best 2lb,
  • Adrian Blackwell and Alan Bennett English visitors had 9 fish in one day, best 2 1/2 lb,
  • Ronan Baggott and Tom Foley Cork and Canada had 15 fish for 2 days, best 2 1/2 lb
  • Mark Malone and Paul Turner had 6 for an afternoon, best 2lb
  • Gerry Madden from Kilconnell in East Galway had 14 fish on the dry fly on Sunday 13th

Best fish recorded was by Mark Malone’s fish 3lb 10 oz which Joe reckons was an overwintered fish.

Next competition

Lake O’Flynn & District Angling Association with the permission of the Donnellan family Ballinlough and Inland Fisheries Ireland are once again hosting The Donnellan perpetual cup on Sunday 10th June. Fishing is from 11-6-pm with refreshments served afterward in Michael Donnellan’s lounge bar, Ballinlough.

This event is a Fly fishing pairs event and attracts anglers from all regions of Country and further afield who will battle it out with the locals to lift the prestigious Donnellan cup fished in memory of Noel Donnellan, Ballinlough. This is a Boat competition with prizes going to the combined weight of fish in each boat with competition rules available at the time of registration.
There is a generous prize fund of (1200 euro) for this event which usually attracts a good entry.The main prize of Donnellan Cup plus (400-euro) will go to the combined boat catch of both anglers, with more excellent prizes down to 5-th place. There will also be a Heaviest fish prize and a Junior section. Anglers intending to participate please take note that fishing on the lake on Friday, and Saturday, prior to this event is strictly prohibited this ensures the integrity of this event both for local and visiting anglers. Life jackets are a compulsory piece of kit for all competitors and this will be strictly enforced by club safety officer on the day for more information contact

Go fishing…

Lough O’Flynn is a 300 acre rich limestone lake located in Co Roscommon just north of Ballinlough village. There are good stocks of wild and stocked brown trout averaging about 1.5 lbs with fish to 3 to 4lbs sometimes caught.
