Good hatches of olives on Corrib, trout slow to react

Declan gibbons, IFI Galway, reports that fishing on Lough Corrib has been challenging with good hatches of olives reported in many areas of the lake but fish not responding accordingly.

On Sunday last Cong Angling Club hosted their Easter Sunday Competition in which 21 anglers participated and 14 fish were caught.

  • 1st place went to Donhnaill Ryan Cong with four fish for 6lbs 9oz
  • 2nd place went to Russell Taylor Dublin with two fish for 4lbs 8oz.
  • 3rd place went to Paul Ramsey Cross with three fish for 3lbs 4oz.

Heaviest Fish went to Domhnaill Ryan 2.9lbs and Domhnaill also won Best Junior Angler.

Staying in the Cong area, David Ryan from Ryan’s River Lodge B&B Fishing & Shooting ( 094-9545956 or info@ryansriverlodge.com<mailto:info@ryansriverlodge.com> ) was on to us with reporting of visiting USA angler Monica Peters from Orlando, Florida landing a super Lough Corrib trout of twelve pounds which she sportingly released.

Basil Sheilds from Ardnasillagh Lodge Oughterard (091-552550) reports of a quitter week at the lodge anglers who did venture out and have success were Peter Boyle and Mark Mulligan who had four fish on Sunday and Joe Murray had one fish two and three quarter pounds on Sunday also. Raymond Lee had two fish on wet olives in the Oughterard area for his days fishing last week.

Staying in the Oughterard area Kevin Molloy of Baurisheen Bay Boat Hire, Guiding and Self Catering (087-9604170) reports of slower activity during the week gone by, On Wednesday last he guided visiting UK angler Phil Canney and Phil had one good trout on Buzzer weighing three and a half pounds. kevin himself was out for a few hours on Saturday and one good fish trolling five pounds in weight.

Mark Colton and Mark Regan enjoyed a good days fishing in the Birchall area on Wednesday last with the duo landing five fish to the boat and the best fish being three and a quarter pounds with an estimated weight of 14.7lbs for the five fish.

On Saturday last Padraig Fahy and Joe Creane had seven fish to the boat in the Birchall area with Padraig landing the best of the fish of four and a half pounds.

In the Ballynalty area Ted Wherry from Mayfly Lodge B&B & Guiding (087-4305957) was on to us that he was guiding one day last week and had two trout to the boat with guest Richard Robinson landing the best fish of a pound and a half..

In the Greenfields area Ulster angler Freddy Steele and John Deery had two fish on Sunday last both fish around the two pound mark.

Corrib View Lodge, corribangling.com, reports a change in the angling returns with guests catching quality trout on olives. Larry boated one client for the week and he returned 14 fish for 6 days including one of 6lb and two over 5lb. All were taken on size 14 dry cdc olives.

Gareth Jones had this smashing 6lb 2oz on a CDC Olive #14. After the photo the fish was released.

Visiting angler Gareth Jones from Airflo had a belter on Thursday last fishing olives below Annaghdown which weighed 6lb 2oz. George Stukley from the UK had 3 fish for two days average weight 2.5lb. Some small patches of campto buzzer are starting to appear and with settled weather it should be next on the menu.
