Young anglers enjoy rainbow trout fishing in the Carton Estate

Carton House fishery report 31st October 2013

Rob Love Fishery Manager at Carton House Estate reports on fishing in the lake fishing last week,

My rather optimistic view last week that the water clarity would improve unfortunately never came to pass and fly fishing for pike on the Rye Lake has proved difficult over the last few days.  With the latest forecast in mind it seems a certainty that the water will remain quite coloured and pike will be hard to tempt to the fly until more normal levels are resumed.  Having said that, when clarity improves again (fingers crossed for a spell of dry weather) fishing should really be superb – hopefully next weeks report will have a more positive outlook on prospects for the following few days.

The Sheet of Water however is fishing very well indeed.  A few anglers were out over the last few days and I must give special mention to two youngsters – Shay Donnelly (aged 14) who was out with his dad Ian last Tuesday and my own daughter Hannah (aged 6) who both had great fun fishing this stretch of water.  Shay was a good young fisherman, proving in difficult windy conditions that distance was no object and turning the line over well, landing 3 or 4 nice rainbows (equalled with a bit of relief by Ian given the banter between the two of them) in a couple of hours fishing before heading for the Rye Lake.

Now while I wouldn’t stretch things so far as to say Hannah can cast a fly beautifully – the two of us were holding the rod as the casts were made, but after a quick demo on a figure of eight retrieve she became quite the little fisherwoman, landing two rainbows in a 20 minute trip to the Sheet of Water on Thursday morning.

The usual rainbow lures in pink, purple or especially olive are working well although Ian Donnelly and Hannah had success on a Woolly Bugger of my own tying (light olive & purple body, dark olive hackle – palmered and lead underbody with a marabou & tinsel tail).  Typical river set ups are ideal as fish are feeding on or close to the surface – especially during the milder hours of early afternoon.

The Sheet of Water is perhaps more suited to the beginner / improving angler and it is far more sheltered than the Rye Lake which helps with anyone brushing up on casting technique.  Please note that fishing on the Sheet of Water is only permitted when with a guide.

A day permit is €50 and a 3 hour permit €35.  Anglers should note that this means they can fish for pike on the Rye Lake and rainbow trout on the Sheet of Water (all fly only) in this timeframe – so if one is not working the other might.
