    Waterville River mouth

The Waterville River is the gateway for salmon and sea trout entering Lough Currane  and the upper lakes in this catchment. It drains Lough Currane which in turn is fed by the upper lakes of Lough Namona, Cloonaghlin Lough, Iskanamacteery and Derriana Loughs and Lough Capall. The Waterville River flows for a short distance directly into the sea at Ballinskelligs Bay on the western shore of Lough Currane. Fishing on this short private stretch of river known as the Waterville River is managed and controlled by Waterville House.

The best of the fishing takes place from May to September and the average size of salmon ranges from 7.5lbs to 9lbs. Salmon fishing can be good early in May and June but the best of the fishing commences with the arrival of the grilse in July. The fishing is worked on a beat system with two four hourly sessions being fished morning and evening. There is a limit of one fish per rod and catch and release is compulsory after this. It is on this short 200m – 300m stretch of river that the famous Butlers Pool is located. This stretch of river extends from the road bridge on the N70 for circa 300m to the sea. Salmon fishing is normally best after a flood has receded.
