Mike Murray of Murrays Angling Services, Portumna reports:

This last week fishing was patchy at first with visiting anglers having little success as compared to previous weeks most gave up and tried elsewhere. The situation changed however mid week when Bream and Hybrids started showing again on the Town Stretch. Dave Halliwell, Mike Waterworth of Yorkshire and myself had moderate catches in the morning and late afternoon with many blank spells in-between. We persevered,  decided to heavily prebait our swims before leaving that evening and decided to start fishing at daybreak.

When we arrived the next morning the river was  a mass of fish topping. We hit on Bream and Hybrids immediately. After an hour or so the bites stopped coming so more feed went in and by changing hookbaits constantly we managed to keep the fish coming, with some sizeable Roach also brought to the net. From then on each day got better and better, with early morning and evening still producing the larger specimens of 3lb to 5lb.

We did lose several large fish to the numerous Pike patrolling about. A local pike angler tried many times to catch these but his 20lb breaking strain line was smashed on every hook up.

The lads were sorry to have to return home on Friday having had yet another great fishing holiday in Portumna.
