Colm Murphy from the Widgeon’s Rest Hunting and Fishing Tackle supplies in Rosslare Stand reports that fishing in the area has improved recently and that good numbers of schoolie bass were caught and released recently in the Coombe area. David Gough and Paul Drum had 7 fish and lost two on razor baits. Water was dirty and wind blowing at 15km. On Monday evening 20th August some schoolies were also caught and released  in the Rosslare area. Previous weeks saw lots of smoothies being taken near the Cannons and Rosslare Point on ragworm crab and sandeel. Good sized mullet in the 5-6lb bracket have been taken from Carne pier on mackerel baits and size 10 hooks. Last but not least two young visitors were kitted out by Colm during their recent visit to the area with lead heads and orange jelly worms. Returning to the shop after the trip Colm asked well lads did you catch anything? The reply was a delighted “yes”. But after listing a number of species Colm was surprised to learn that the lads had taken a number of dogfish fishing the jelly worms as they were shown. The youngsters were back for more bait and advice and headed off again to see what else they could catch.
