Ken O’Neill reports on Clare’s Rivers and Lakes:

West Clare Rivers and Lakes

Rivers are producing some nice trout at the moment, with many sea-trout (less than 40cm) being caught.  Kilkee Reservoir is fishing well also at the moment with stocked trout as is Knockerra Lake near Killimer.

14 Trout were caught on a Newmarket-on-Fergus Lake during the week.  Students from Youthreach, O’Connell Avenue, Limerick enjoyed a day’s fishing at the scenic Rathlahinne Trout Angling Centre just outside Newmarket on Fergus last week, It was a nice overcast day and the trout were certainly biting, with all anglers landing at least one trout.

Quin River has good water at the moment for Trout.  Trout sizes range from ½ to 1lb fish on the fly.

Fergus River

The Fergus is in flood at the moment.   Some nice trout were caught during the rising flood in Ennis.  All trout anglers on the Fergus are requested to pay heed to their hook sizes in order to reduce the risk of accidently catching and killing Salmon at this time when there is a run on.

East Clare Rivers and lakes

Lough Derg

There are plenty of Trout rising but they are hard to catch at the moment.

Mountshannon area

Caenis is landing on water but fishing is poor enough.  This time of year is generally quiet as the mayfly hatch is over and there is a pause in angling on the lake afterwards.  2lb Trout caught on the Lake near Mountshannon trolling.
