Greg LaTour reoprts on the pike fishing at Lough Allua…

The Macroom Pike Anglers held their last competition of the year on Lough Allua on October 25th. 13 anglers managed to land 19 pike , the biggest fish measuring 94cm / 6,4 kg(see photo) was caught on a dead roach . A lot of fish have been lost and most were caught on dead bait.

On October 29th only 2 pike were taken, one of 7lbs.and one of 8lbs, and a large eel, hooked on an 8 inch smelt (!), was also carefully released.

Over the weekend Greg’s wife, Sigi, caught 2 decent pike on a trolled Castaic softbait trout (12″)in 15ft of water . The 1st was their first 20lbs.+ pike of the month measuring 104cm long. and wins our Catch of the Week.  Number 2 weighed 11lbs. and measured 88cm. Not bad for a  fairly cold November day with a stiff north-westerly.

Lough Allua isn’t currently throwing up huge numbers of pike, but the ones we are getting are all good sized fish in perfect shape. Right now the trolled lures still work, but it won’t be that successful in a few weeks time when pike go deeper as the water gets colder. Then ledgered bait fish like mackerel and smelt should work best.
