With coffee and good company Rookiebassangler Steven Neely tackles the cold and the fish. He reports:
We headed up the Bann system to find some fishable water in a few of the canals – the main river itself was in full flood and there was no chance of a fish in the main current.
The roads hadn’t been gritted and it was a chilly 0.5 degrees – it was certainly a cold one on the finger tips but we had a good supply of coffee to keep us going throughout the day.
The perch seemed to be nipping and poking at the tails for quite some time – we tried down sizing but this didn’t seem to make any difference – they just didn’t want to feed.
Then out of the blue – bang …. fish on! The perch started to come on the feed. They still had a little awkwardness about them but with persistence we nailed a few decent sized ones.
We used a mixture of small shads between 3 and 4 inches long. The Molix RA, Illex Ammonite and 90mm Fiiish Black Minnow all seduced a few chubby perch.
Finally we got some decent sport ….. the past few outings in fresh water had been a bit of a flop but persistence paid off and we ended up with a good few fish between the three of us.
Normally our perch are little tiny, carbon copies but these seemed a little better …. it will be interesting to see how the mark fairs next time we visit.
