Daniel Brosnan (PRO) for Tralee Bay Sea Angling Club reports with style on the John Lacey Memorial Competition which took place on Sunday January 19th 2014 at Fenit Pier from 3pm to 7pm.

++++++++++++++ REPORT +++++++++++++++++

What a day of fishing, 609 fish caught and released, 33 anglers fishing and even better some new anglers on the scene…..

Conditions looked bad on my arrival at about 1.45pm but as you can see in the pictures it was great craic from start to finish. It wasn’t too cold and after the storms we had over the last few weeks maybe, we have all become weather hardened….

The pier was packed which is a marvellous sign for the middle of January and the fish played ball from start, till finish. There was a lot of small fish caught but there was some huge coalies and fat rockling. There was also sea gulls caught as you will see in the pictures but thankfully, due to club rules, all animals and fish were returned to there rightful habitat safe and sound….

Also when viewing the pictures you will Mr John Sheehan’s new Hummpa Lumppa, Sheehan Style….

It has taken john about four years to fine tune this beach buggy beast and he will be taking orders from the end of january on….

Back to the fishing, as i said it started fast and Colm McDaid who was pegged alongside me, pulled in successive fish in the first hour. I think he was on about 6 fish in 60 mins. The usual suspects were back at it also and Phil Ord pulled in a 40 cm COALIE and every knew it would be hard to beat that in the pools….

Chris o Sullivan had caught his 10 undersize in the first hour and there was literally fish being pulled onto the pier from everywhere….

Martin Mcgowan was going well and new Irish angling star Aidan O Halloran was giving everyone a master class…

Aidan o Sullivan who was back to his best after his blinding start last year, had a good few fish in the first half of the match. Connie o Sullivan was also catching fish every cast….

There was some nice flats caught also, Anthony Foley and his wife Niki had a nice flounder and Sean Fitzgerald had a cracker towards the end of the comp….

Out of the juniors new Tralee Bay Sea Angling Club angler Paddy McMahon was playing a blinder and this angler will be one to watch for the future….

What are the boys up to? ……

Jack Lacey who had kindly sponsored the comp was also in attendance catching fish and it was great to see old and new members mixing up, chatting but most of all catching fish….

It was gonna be a tight comp, everyone knew that, David o Sullivan had some good fish towards the end, and Martin McGowan pulled a 30cm Dab and 33cm flounder out with his second last cast. Like Mr Troy Francis would say, you just can’t beat “LUCK”!!!!!!….

More new anglers, James Allman and Shane McMahon were catching a lot of fish and these lads will have to be watched for the year. If they keep coming they can finish high up in the master angler table, no problem….

Eugene Farrelly who had a slow start like always pulled about ten fish out of the last hour and seriously this comp was one of those when you just ran out of bait. I myself had twenty fish and i ran out of everything and couldn’t fish properly the last hour….

Great day had by all and for me the best comp on the pier in a while….

Don’t tackle with this bird!!!!!

Tralee Bay SAC - BirdTralee Bay SAC - Releasing birdThanks for everyone coming out and hopefully people can continue to come to the competitions. There is only 9 comps this year so people won’t have the option of missing a lot and there is a massive break in the summer for holidays and summer breaks…
