Greg Latour of Tir na Spideog reports on the pike fishing at Lough Allua…

Earlier in May conditions were perfect on Lough Allua, and all my guests were catching decent pike. My Dutch clients certainly took the right decision in booking a guide for their 1st time fishing this vast lake. They had 4 good sized pike up to 95 cm on the guided trip and a good few more played and lost. One of the more interesting fish they caught was a rare two-tone fish.

Later in the month things were different and now after a few slow days, the increasing cloud and fresh north-westerly wind stirred have things up on Lough Allua.

As my Dutch clients only touched down in Cork just before midday on Thursday 28th we only had 3 hours to fish this vast amount of water. 6 pike were played and a good few lost. One of the anglers got his first ever pike a lovely 95cm fish.

On Monday I got a new toy for my birthday.. The 1st pike caught on film with my “Waterwolf Underwater camera” measured only 60 cm and I hope the quality of the coverage will increase with better visibility.

The lure was a Rozemeijer swimbait trolled in 5ft.of water. I am sure greater Lough Allua Film stars will feature soon, especially as the bream are spawning and pike are following the shoals with great interest…
