An update from Ian Powell of the Blackwater Lodge :

It’s a bright breezy morning here. There was a band of quite heavy rain across the catchment in the early hours. The radar picture shows the situation at 04.00. The forecast is for unsettled weather into the weekend.

The upper river at Millstreet is starting to rise fairly quickly this morning. Killavullen is just starting to rise slowly & the gauge there is at 1.35m at 10.00.

The lower river at Ballyduff is rising slowly & is at 0.43m at 10.00. Clarity this morning is about 3 feet.

Water temperature at Ballyduff: 10.2ºC / 50.8ºF & steady.

Prospects.
The river is going to be rising today – it remains to be seen by how much. This rise – combined with a better run of fish coming into the river yesterday – bodes well for sport in the coming days.

We had high water for the first 3 weeks of May. Some fish came in then, but the sea-liced larger May fish & the first of the grilse seem to be just starting to run in better numbers now. The river had dropped back, but rain last night should give us another well-timed rise in the water. There are reports of a good run of fish going through the lower river yesterday. With very few rods fishing we caught 8 fish to 11lb. in the last 5 days to May 25th. for just 39 rod days. Yesterday, one rod caught two very fresh fish including the Best of Season so far. The prospects are looking excellent for the coming weeks.

Catches. Paul Sands (UK) released two very fresh fish on fly on Lower Kilmurry yesterday including the Best of Season so far at 11½lb. He saw a good number of fish moving during the day.

Availability

There is no problem for fishing availability in the coming weeks. Now is also the time to think about booking your fishing break for the prime times in the coming season before it’s too late.
