Ghillie Vincent Appleby reports on the salmon and sea trout fishing in the past week on Lough Currane..

1/7/15 The first day of July brought very little action in the fly department and for good reason, Lough Currane was like a milk pond. But with the elements against them at least two Anglers kept the Lough Currane flag flying high. UK angler Mr. Greg Sutton, fishing out of http://www.golflinksview.kerry-ireland.com/index.html  caught a lightening fresh 6 lbs. grilse on the troll, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com.  A client fishing with his Gillie MD, caught a fine 4 ½ lbs. grilse. Just for the record there were about 10 boats out fishing and I come to the conclusion some anglers are not letting their fingers do the talking at the end of their day. All I can say is if I didn’t let my fingers do the talking you the readers wouldn’t be amused and there wouldn’t be any argument to that. Wind as already stated and overcast with heavy rain at times.

2/7/15 We Start in the Salmon department, UK Angler, Mr. Greg Sutton, fishing out of http://www.golflinksview.kerry-ireland.com/index.html, caught a fine 5 ½ lbs. grilse on the troll at the point of Green Island, while fishing with his gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com.  An angler fishing on his own caught a Grilse on the troll. Now to the Sea Trout department, UK Anglers, Mr. Merick Parsons and Mr. Graham Elswood, fishing out of www.curranelodge.ie caught and released 5 Sea Trout up to 3 ½ lbs. Their Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com told me that they were using a floating line a their star flie was the Bibio. Wind S then veered SW fresh with reasonable cloud cover.

John Burton caught and released a 3 ½ lbs Sea Trout on the fly

3/7/15 It was a wild day on Lough Currane, with a strong SSE wind blowing and all the boats on the North side were landed by lunch time. But wind or no wind this didn’t deter UK Anglers Mr. Graham Elswood, fishing out of www.curranelodge.ie, from catching a lightening fresh 4 ¼ lbs. grilse on the troll. Mr. Merick Parsons finished their morning off with a fine 3 lbs. Sea Trout, caught on the drift and he sportingly put back. the pair were guided by their Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com. Now we head over to the South side and hired out boat department of www.lakelandshouse.com where John Burton caught and released a 3 ½ lbs. Sea Trout on the fly.

4/7/15 It was a wild gusty day, this day of American independence and my Noble Game fish on Lough Currane made sure that they kept their independence. Wind as already stated with the odd shower.

Steven from Serbia, caught a 3 ½ lbs. Grilse on the troll,

5/7/15 Fitzgerald Stadium in Killarney was the Anglers choice of venue today, because the Kingdom of Kerry were playing the Trebles, sorry!! Rebels of Cork, but thankfully, Steven from Serbia, caught a 3 ½ lbs. grilse on the troll, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Frank Donnelly of www.lakelandshouse.com. To all you anglers that failed to put boat to water, I can tell you one thing without any fear of contradiction, Lough Currane is the Fitzgerald Stadium of Game Fishing in Kerry and there is No Draws, just Fish and the odd blank!! Wind SW fresh with good cloud cover.

Mike the Matador
Mike the Matador – the salmon was caught “locally”

6/7/15 UK Angler Mr. Vincent Spittal, caught a fine Grilse on the Troll, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com. Now we head to the river department and which river you have three choices, all I know is the Crowned Kerry Matador, Mike the Bull caught a cracker of a Salmon in the 11 lbs. class, caught on his special Black Birds Fancy fly. Just for the record I asked Mike where he caught his fine Salmon, he replied no comment. Wind SW fresh with good cloud cover.

7/7/15 It was a rough day on the Waterville Fishery and it wasn’t easy to manipulate the flies.  But  UK angler Mr. Mark Knowles, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com caught 2 Grilse and finished their day with a Sea Trout. Now we head to the upper lakes and Lough Cloonaghlin and catch of the day goes to 11 year old  Master Joe Kirwan, who battled the elements and was rewarded with 9 fine Brown Trout, the best of which was 2 ½ lbs. all caught on the fly. Wind West and wild and these conditions makes Joe’s fine catch even more satisfying.

John Allen’s sea trout from Derriana

8/7/15 The Fly takes all the headlines. Today we start with the Upper Lakes where John Allen was up on Derriana for a few hours today and managed a few brownies to 1 lbs. and a nice Sea Trout of about 2.75 / 3lbs  which he released. Now we head down stream to the Big Lake / Lough Currane and again the fly was the main attracter. UK angler Dave Eccelstone, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Vincent O’Sullivan of www.vincentsfishing.com caught a fine 4lbs. grilse and finished his day off with a great 7 lbs. 8oz. Sea Trout. Last but not least, UK angler Mr. Mark Knowles, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com caught  1 grilse. Wind NW moderate with reasonable cloud cover.
