James McGurrin was in touch to tell us he had a great day out on Derg last weekend considering the frosty, freezing conditions at the start of the morning. James and Co. took the boat out of Killaloe from Noel Bulger who has, James tells us, a great fleet of boats with fishfinders, life jackets, the whole lot!

lough derg pike
The anglers didn’t catch any monsters but there were a couple of nice fish in the boat.

It wasn’t long before they contacted fish on the troll which proved to be the only way they’d catch fish for the day. The first pike was caught on a big, 34 cm Dexter shad, pike colour, weighing close to 14lb. They then missed a few fish but hooked into another nice fish and it was landed, weighing around 15lb caught on a bulldog, perch colour.

Lough Derg has built up a huge reputation as a productive pike venue in the last number of years and there seems to be always a corner of the lake where pike can be caught through out the season.

Go fishing on Lough Derg…
