Lindsey Clarke reports from the RIVER DROWES – Monday 27th June  to Sunday 3rd July 2016

Water levels on the Drowes were very good this week. The gauge read 0.56m on Monday and the river hovered around this level all week but began to rise again at the weekend. By the end of play on Sunday, the gauge read 0.59m. Nice water indeed. The river continued to fish very well for grilse with some 130 fish caught for the week! Given here are some of the catches taken from the Fishery Catch Register. On Monday, Tony Allen reported a 3lb grilse caught on shrimp. On Thursday, Patrick O’Malley recorded a 4lb grilse caught on shrimp from the Wash Stones. Johnny Ciconte reported a 3lb grilse caught on a spinner from The Meadows. Michael Kruse logged 2 grilse weighing 3 & 4lb caught on a fly from Briney’s. Richard Evans registered 2 grilse weighing 2½ & 4lb caught on worm from the Mill Pool. Billy Gilbert recorded a 7lb salmon caught on fly from the Sea Pools and David McKee accounted for a 4lb grilse caught on shrimp from the Sea Pools.

On Saturday, Rory Morrin recorded a 5lb grilse caught on fly from Tinker’s Hole. Seamus O’Sullivan accounted for a 4lb grilse caught on fly from Terrace and Paul Rippingale accounted for 4 fish weighing from 3lb to 9lb caught on spinner and prawn. On Sunday, P.J. Bailey registered a 3lb grilse caught on worm. Over the week the angling party’s staying at Lareen recorded numerous grilse caught. Antonio Barrets party recorded 10 grilse weighing from 3 to 4lb caught on worm from various pools. Oscar Barrets party reported 9 grilse weighing from 3 to 4lb caught from various pools. Charles Mascrus’s party logged 8 grilse weighing from 3 to 5lb caught on flies from various pools. Angel Voarmod’s party recorded 7 grilse weighing from 3 to 4lb caught on flies from various pools and Rodriguez Ronaii’s party accounted for 5 grilse weighing from 3 to 4lb caught on flies from various pools. Water levels will remain good for the coming week on the Drowes and prospects look very good for those venturing out on this famous salmon fishery.
