Lindsey Clarke reports from Owenea Fishery – Monday 27th June to Sunday 3rd July 2016
The Owenea received some nice water conditions this week and the salmon run picked up at last. Most days brought good water levels and the gauge average for the week was much improved reading 0.27 metres. The fishery was not particularly busy with 16 visiting rods fishing for the week but local rods were out in fair numbers. There was around 20 salmon caught for the week and given here are some of the catches taken from the fishery catch register.
On Monday, Michael McCrory recorded a 10lb salmon caught on a fly from beat 8 and John Ward accounted for a 4½lb grilse caught on a spinner from beat 5. On Tuesday, Dessie Coyle reported a 12½lb salmon caught on a fly from beat 7. On Thursday, Ethan Ward recorded an 11lb salmon caught on a spinner from beat 5. John Boyle reported 2 grilse weighing 3 & 4lb caught on a fly from beats 3 & 4 with the smaller of these being released again and Michael McCrory accounted for 2 grilse weighing 5 & 6½lb caught on a fly from beat 5 with the smaller of these being released again. On Sunday, Alan Watson registered a 4lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 6.
The forecast for the coming week is for periods of rain and hopefully this will translate into nice water levels for angling. Prospects look good.
