Delphi manager David McEvoy gives us a round up of all the fishing during the last month:
February 2016 did not reach the spectacular fishing of last year but we did manage to land three, which is more in keeping with our normal returns for February over the last number of years.
Our “Blast and Cast” team from Germany did manage to land the first on opening day, a nice sea liced fish of approx. 6lbs from Morrison’s on a Cascade tube, with the river running 65. Water levels throughout the month were generally high with levels more often than not above 60. This makes fishing in the early months very challenging with fish more difficult to locate. Lower water with colder water temperatures tends to slow the fish down a bit which makes them easier to target. Total rainfall for the month was 250.8mms or 9.9 inches.
Our second of the month which was taken by Michael Griffin was indeed well deserved. Michael had a beautiful fish of 11lbs 10ozs from the Waterfall pool on a Delphi Collie with the water at 78 and a gale blowing from WNW. It was a tremendous feat to land such a wonderful fish in such high water.
We had a few of our old regular anglers return and it must be said they all tried hard, with plenty joy but no fish. Philip McGarrity and friends returned again this year after last year’s very productive few days but this year they didn’t bank anything but they met two fish. There were a couple of fish met last Friday and as they were only handshakes it’s always difficult to know whether it’s a kelt or a fresh fish.
We were joined by Angus Sutherland and company last weekend and this year it was Angus’ turn as opposed to David Felton. Angus landed a lovely sea liced fish of 10lbs 4ozs on Sunday in the Meadow pool on a Sunray Shadow. At this stage the water was at 38 which was about as low as it got for the whole month. Indeed the last few days of February were magnificent as regards weather as we had a few days with blue skies and winter sunshine which is a joy to behold after what can only be described as a very grey winter.
Angus’ fish brought our total for the month to three. Sadly we didn’t manage to catch anything today as we had heavy rain again and the water rose steadily during the day and is now running at 80, which if it dries up should mean lovely water conditions for the opening days of March.
