Last week it was tope and blue sharks for anglers on the Clare Dragoon and over the weekend there was more in store including serious sixgill sharks. Skipper Luke Aston reports…

Before the weekend we had blue sharks and tope (in the Estuary) and our run of good fortune with the sharks continues

4.6m sixgill shark
4.6m sixgill shark – a real monster

On Saturday we were out at the Skate / Sixgills again today and had a monster to the boat. At 4.6mtr long it was one of the biggest I’ve seen. Considering the record one we caught was 3.9mtr and 1056lb I can say this one was well over 1300lb. A fish of a lifetime for Tony Carrig.

On Sunday we were back out with a new group and had a lovely drift on the reefs. Some fine Ling around. Monday was a wet one but we had a nice day at the Congers tucked up in shelter.

On Tuesday, 02 August, we had a great shark drift with action from the off. We had 7 blue shark and 2 Porbeagles to the boat and a lots of runs and dropped baits. Looks like it’s going to be a top shark year and great to see the Porbeagle about so early. They were about 35 and 75lbs and the bigger one gave a good scrap.

Also fishing the Clare Coast was the Lady Gwen. A group of Limerick anglers were out on Friday and they had a good mix of species including spurdogs. Saturday and Sunday was spent on the reefs in pursuit of pollack, mackerel and the like. On Monday it was wet but the angles were well prepared and had some nice species today, including a”baby blue shark” that was tagged and released.
