Lindsey Clarke reports from LOUGH MELVIN – Monday 22nd to Sunday 28th August 2016.
There was little in the way of salmon angling this week with only a couple of boats venturing out after the same. I have yet to hear of any salmon caught. The trout fishing was fair however and this week The Garrison & lough Melvin Anglers hosted their 4 day Melvin Open Pairs 2016 competition. Qualifying days were on Thursday, Friday and Saturday with the final held on Sunday. Full results are available at: http://www.garrisonandloughmelvinanglersassoc.co.uk/Results_2016.pdf
The weather towards the weekend was warm and sunny with only light winds and competitors had to work for their fish. Over the qualifying days there were some good trout caught up to 4½lb caught. On Sunday, conditions were particularly challenging with high air temperatures and extended periods of sun. The competition on the final day was won by James Cox and Fechin McMorrow who each received a piece of Galway Crystal and a cheque for £2,250. In second place were Peter McKenna and Paul Rooney with James Doherty and John Brennan taking 3rd place.
