Dermot Page reports on the Final of Rathcon Winter League, fished on Sunday, 20 February…
20 March: The winter league final has just finished. There were 15 anglers present and the lake was fished over 15 pegs. It was a cool start to the day but eventually the sun broke through to make it a challenging but pleasant day for fishing. The first session produced 8 fish caught right round the lake. Blobs and Snakes and other lures started off well but as the day warmed the nymphs came into effect. In total 44 fish were landed the biggest of which was 59 cm.
Many thanks to all the stewards throughout the qualifiers and final and to Southside Angling for their continued support and sponsorship of prizes. Congratulations to Martin McGorian for winning the final in what was a very impressive return all on nymphs.
The results are:

  • 1st Martin McGorian – 11 fish
  • 2nd Joe Winder – 6 fish (biggest fish)
  • 3rd Aidan Heffernan – 5 fish
  • 4th – John Kellagher – 4 fish

Go fishing…

Rathcon Lake is 8.5 acres and is stocked with top quality rainbow trout. The lake is fly fishing only and designed to allow maximum fishing so that 90% of the water can be covered. The average depth is 10ft with deep holes of up to 20ft in places. The fishery is open all year round and is home to a wide range of fly life, in particular buzzers, sedges, hawthorn and daddylonglegs, all providing excellent dry fly fishing, especially in the summer evenings.
