Osgur Grieve reports on fishing on the Erriff from May 25th to June 5th.
We had a quiet end to May with bright sunshine and little fishing being done due to the Mediterranean style of weather we’ve been experiencing. After a 2 week drought we had a small dirty spate on the evening of the 4th of June to bring the river up from 0.54m to around 1.2m – this was enough to encourage the fish that had been waiting out at sea to run the river. On Monday evening 4th June Larry Bergin had an 8.6lbs ranched salmon from the Falls on a Cascade.
The following morning the river was still quite murky and had dropped quickly, down to 0.6m. Despite this John Phelan landed a ranched salmon of 8.3lbs from the Falls on a Cascade, John also hooked and lost a few more. Peter Murphy released a wild 8.7lbs salmon from the Falls along with our first sea trout of the season of about 1lbs on a Cascade.
The next decent amount of rainfall should entice some more fresh fish into the system.
