Mick Flanagan from Midland Angling has a roundup of trout fishing news from the midlands area.

SIDNEY / MULLINGAR ANGLER. Anthony Hoey of Green Road is back home in Mullingar for a few weeks, and is enjoying catching up with some old friends. Anthony is all his life living in Australia, and its a few years now since he was back home for a holiday. This time around we had a wonderful day on Owel, and Anthony latched onto some cracking trout, with one fish weighing 3lbs 12oz.

That day we had a bit of fun, and met up with the Nodger Boyle for lunch at Brabson’s Point. Andy “Nodger” Boyle is one of our top class fly anglers, and was also in the thick of the action on Owel, boating some nice trout. Naturally there were some fishy stories told as we dined on Brabson’s Point, and they were all true of coarse.

WASHINGTON D.C. / MULLINGAR ANGLER. David Quirke is back over from Washington D.C. visiting his parents in Slanemore, and family members scattered across the Midlands. David is a top class fly angler and last year we photographed David with one of the best brown I have seen caught on Mount Dalton. Last week we fished Lene and Owel, and I had a 4lbs 15oz rainbow from Lene on the dry Daddy longlegs.

On Owel we fished late into the evening, and quite a few Buzzers hatched just at dark. Trout were on the move early in the evening, but when the fly started to hatch there was some movement on the lake surface. That evening we met Pauric Martin of Harbour Court and Pauric is having a good season on Owel, catching quality trout pushing the 3lbs mark.

NEW YORK / MULLINGAR ANGLER. I was reeling in the years last week with Joe O’Brien from Tyrrellpass. Joe and his family run the very successful O’Brien’s Garage, and he has being in New York for some years. It’s 3 years roughly since I fished with Joe, and we had a bit of fun on Owel in blustery conditions. Naturally we had a lot of catching up to do, on the day and even managed to catch 4 lovely trout.

TROUT ATTACK. Sheelin and Ree have being producing some nice trout on the troll and fly in recent days. Willie Fitzgerald a member of Lough Lene Anglers had a super 10lbs trout from Sheelin, which was photographed and released. On Ree young Tyler Coyne is realy enjoying his summer school holidays, and had a few nice fish recently with dad Kevin. Both these lakes are worth a trip in the coming weeks.
CLONHUGH CUP. Hard to believe we are settling into September, and the last trout competitions are coming on line. Lough Owel will not close till October 12th, but this Sunday Lough Owel Trout Preservations Association host their last club competition of the season. The Clonhugh Cup will be fished from 11am-7pm. Check –in Mullallys and Tullaghan.
