NCFFI report on the weekend’s fishing at Fermoy…

Blackwater

This fishing for the festival anglers was better than expected with conditions less than favourable; gin clear and low water levels on the River Blackwater. Fermoy AC were met with less than half the usual swims to fish from with the collapse of part of the weir causing the water levels upstream to drop 5ft. The fishing is inaccessible with this decrease in the water level which has led to some banks being more than 8ft from the waters edge. But pegs were found for the visiting anglers.

The winner of the Fermoy Coarse Angling Spring Festival 2019 is Cedric Baldwin of Nottingham; a great achievement on his very first visit to the River Blackwater, winning with a total weight of 33lb 2ozs. it was a close finish to the festival and 2nd Nick Chaffer, Mirfield with 30lb 6ozs, 3rd was Malc Nicholson, Nottingham with 29lb 6ozs, 4th Wayne Swinscoe with 29lb 4ozs, 5th Martin Highe, Mirfield 27lb 10ozs.

Day one winner was Cedric Baldwin with 17lb from the middle of the Meadows section, Martin Highe, was 2nd with 14lb 13ozs from section C below the Viaduct and 3rd was Ian Daly, Mirfield with 13lb 8ozs from Castlehyde.

Day two winner was Malc Nicholson, with 14lb 2ozs from the salmon hut on section C, 2nd was Wayne Swinscoe with 12lb 8ozs and 3rd was John Whitehouse, Darlington with 10lb 6 ozs.

Day three winner was Dave Limbert with 8lb 12ozs, 2nd Cedric Balwin with 8lb 6 ozs and 3rd was Craig Highe with 8lb 4ozs. it was tougher on the river today as water levels continue to drop.

During festival week two days were spent on Inniscarra Lake at the Garden Centre where the 24 anglers had some great catches. Winner of the event was Nigel Hirst, Mirfield with 72lb 2ozs, 2nd Martin Highe 69lb, 1ozs, 3rd Trev Platt with 39lb 12ozs.

National Coarse Fishing Federation of Ireland, NCFFI

The National Coarse Fishing Federation of Ireland, NCFFI has been representing coarse angling in Ireland since 1962, the federation was formed by a group of angling clubs who foresaw the need for governance and a presence on the international match scene. The founding clubs were Fermoy AC, Prosperous AC, Cavan AC, Royal Enfield CAC and Ballinamore AC who were at this time facilitating the huge numbers of visiting anglers coming to match fish working hard to promote angling tourism which continues today.

Coarse angling in Ireland is closely linked to tourism due to the fine selection of natural venues from the North to the South of the island utilised by anglers from home and overseas. Domestic championships have as a result always been open to the visiting angler and the festivals run by our clubs continue to attract large numbers from overseas.  For details of future events please visit www.ncffi.ie
