What does a typical day in the life of a fishery officer look like?
There is no typical day, a certain amount of time would be administration and then everything else can be varied.
Did you always want to be a Fishery Officer?
I started as a fish farmer before later moving into fisheries. Then I saw this job advertised and I knew it was for me. I have been working in Inland Fisheries Ireland since 2003.
What attracted you to this profession?
I always had a fascination for water, rivers and streams and the things that live in them.
What is your favourite thing about the job?
The variety of people you meet and the challenges you face.
What is the most challenging thing about the job?
Having to deal with all the different people you meet and trying to keep everybody happy.
What keeps you motivated in your day to day work?
I enjoy my job, the variety keeps you motivated. I just couldn’t sit inside on a fine day working in an office looking out the window.
What do you think about the most important skills needed for this position?
People skills and the ability to deal with people.
What is the most interesting thing you have discovered or seen in your job?
I love the moments when you see an otter or an eagle or something that is just pure nature.
What are you most proud of in your working life?
I would be delighted if, when I retire, I can show my grandson salmon in a river.
What do you do in your spare time to unwind?
Fishing.
What would you say to someone thinking about a career in fisheries?
If you like variety and the outdoors and a challenge try it. If you appreciate the environment and nature and you want to be doing something to maintain it, then apply.
