Lough Derg is a firm favourite with predator anglers and it’s no surprise why when you consider the number of 100cm plus pike landed by anglers there every year. Add to that the abundance of good sized perch and a healthy trout population there’s every reason to spend time on the lake throwing lures for whatever may bite.

The trout season may be over for another year, but with plenty of pike and perch action yet to come there’s no reason to stop fishing on this iconic lake. We join Paul Bourke for some angling updates…

Lough Derg pike

25 September: Love it when on the first drift of the morning, a green missile smashes your guests bait broadside… Fight was unreal from this fish. Was only 101 cms but punched above its size.

27 September: Just before storm Agnes hit Ed and myself managed to get a couple of chunky ones. Had to finish early too, just as they started to feed. Anyway, that’s fishing for you…

01 October: Short afternoon session today produced a couple of nice pike and 15 or so perch. Best pike going 106cms 99cms….

But wait there’s more…  Senan Stanley was also out over the weekend and marked the end of September with some epic perch fishing catching a number of fish to almost 40cm – a worthy Catch of the Week.

And lastly, anyone who has read the Irish Angling Update over the years knows that we are big on water safety, so we finish this report with some top class advice from Senan on lifejackets.
