Fine trout on the Maigue and a good Deel of wilderness fishing

Paddy Dunworth reports on a few recent trips out with clients on some of Co. Limerick’s trout rivers…

02/06 Jason Khym took time out from an equestrian holiday to flyfish. One of his charges, Lora Raper, who enjoys fishing for smalmouth bass back home in the USA also came along. We arrived a little early to the Adrare stretch of the Maigue andas the last of the ebb tide dropped out of the river Jason and Laura had a chance to refresh their flycasting skills. Both fished bead-head Hares Ear on the point with an Alder as dropper but even after the level finally reached it’s normal height it took a while for the fish to take consistently. Then Jason and Lora enjoyed a couple of hours of great sport in what was a very cool afternoon compared to the previous day. They both had around 10 fish each, losing many more as is the case here.

01/06 Steve Murphy from Ontario fished a short session on the Deel before returning to the Maigue at Adare where he had several small but lively trout to the fly. We then proceeded to the Fanningstown Castle waters some 2 miles upstream of Castleroberts, this is a lovely stretch with a weir at it’s uppermost boundary. Steve had a strong offer on a streamer, the water still being somewhat coloured. The exercise was to show Steve the water so he can fish it solo during his week long holiday here. We made it home just in time to see the end of the Limerick v Tipperary game, what a win! Steve’s now a firm fan of the fishing here and hurling!

29/05 Turlough Herbert joined me for an evening session on the Upper Deel yesterday. The banks are totally wild because it sees little fishing activity. It’s wilderness fishing at it’s best and most challenging. Though much smaller than it is around Rathkeale it holds some good fish, all wild and prepared to give a good account of themselves. Though there was a rise on when we started around 6.30pm Turlough opted to fish small nymphs and was soon meeting small but hyper trout. I moved upstream, getting out of the river and getting access back in again further up proved difficult, this re-inforces the wild nature of these reaches of the Deel. As a man said to me prior to our visit ‘ not the place to take a new pair of breathable waders’!

I had a couple of fish on dry BWO’s and Turlough continued to experiment crossing from nymph to dry to New Zealand style, meeting fish on all methods. These fish probably never saw an artificial in their lives. All fish were released, indeed many came off in play such was the reaction when hooked.

I hope we still have these wild places in 20years time.

Loughs Derryclare and Inagh lie in the lovely Inagh Valley with the Twelve Pins (Bens) of Connemara rising steeply to the west, and the Maumturk Mountain range to the east. There are two short connecting rivers, which contain four river beats. The fishery has spring salmon, grilse, sea trout and large indigenous brown trout. In recent years the fishery has seen a resurgence of fish numbers, and in 2010 – 2012, the fishery has produced Salmon to 15lbs, Sea Trout to 5lbs and Brown Trout to 12lbs.

Grilse and bigger salmon in the Moy system, estuary fishing well for sea trout

Salmon fishing at the Moy Fishery was a quiet affair this last week with only a few fish reported. A mix of grilse and some bigger fish are in the system now and some 3lb class fish were taken on spinner.

salmon
Grilse of 3lb and. 3.75 lbs caught on spinner at the Ridge Pool

The Foxford Salmon Anglers water (www.foxfordsalmonanglers.com) had 14 Salmon for the week, notable ones were a 12lb Fish caught by Jim Martin Snr. on worm, Martin King’s  11.5lb fish on worm and  Herbert Zettel had a nice fresh run fish of 8lbs also on worm.

Martin King with a nice 11.5lb fish on worm

Elsewhere in the Foxford area spinning accounted for a few salmon in the 10lb class at Mount Falcon  and at the Foxford Fishery but worm was the successful method at the Scott, Knox Gore fishery at Coolcronan, at Armstongs, at the Rinanney Fishery and at Gannons.

A variety of methods caught salmon at Cloongee and the East Mayo Anglers, Balintemple where fish fell to fly, spinner, worm and bubble and fly. Visiting angler Bertrand Savery, France, had a 14lb salmon at the East Mayo Anglers (www.eastmayoanglers.com) fishery on spinner.

Moy Estuary

Visiting anglers from 6 countries fished on Pegasus with Judd Ruane last week, namely, France, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Holland and the UK. The total catch was 126 sea trout with 42 retained. The arrival of a mild southerly, late in the week, brought a good head of sea trout into the estuary and some of the local anglers enjoyed good results as well.

Lough Ennell starting to fish well

Dermot Broughan, IFI, reports that Kenny Kiernan and John Plunkett had  6 trout on Ennell on Sunday the 31st of May. The best  fish weighed in at 3 ½lb and all were returned.  Ennell has started to produce the goods and local angler Thos Grimes reported having had a good week on the lake.

Joe Kenna has had a good evening on the river Inny with some nice fish to the 2lb mark.

Hopes for salmon fishing on Laune to improve

salmon
Tom Curtayne caught this beauty on the Fly at Gorry on Sunday morning, 01 June. At 14lbs a nice fish to catch on the fly. Over the last two weeks there have been a few fish encountered well into double figures.

Good water on the Laune but reports of salmon on the system are few and far between.

KILLARNEY LAKES AND LOUGH LEANE

2 salmon landed for the week trolling on Lough Leane.

KILLARNEY FLESK

No salmon were reported from the Flesk in the last week.

RIVER LAUNE BEATS 1 AND 2

No salmon were reported from beats 1 or 2 of the Laune recently.

LAUNE SALMON AND TROUT ANGLERS’ ASSOCIATION WATERS AND BEAT 3

Billy Downes reports that as of Tuesday 2nd June the water is at a lovely 1.5 feet on the gauge at Johnston’s….

There were a few good fish met early in the week one lost on the fly at Johnston’s after 15 minutes described as best fish of a 40 year angling career. The same angler failed to meet any other fish for the week.

There were eight fish reported from the Laune for the week this is a significant improvement but still not great for the effort put in.  Yesterday, Monday was the best day as you would expect with nets off and a big angling effort.  These fish were caught in Paul Connor’s and Johnston’s.  John O’Reilly, a new member of Laune Anglers, released a grilse of 4 lbs at Crowley’s.

salmon
Tom Curtayne caught this beauty on the Fly at Gorry on Sunday morning, 01 June. At 14lbs a nice fish to catch on the fly. Over the last two weeks there have been a few fish encountered well into double figures.

Water down river is still perfect for all methods.

Beat 3:

There are a few salmon holding up in pools down river from Beaufort Bridge and a good few sea trout also but they are hard to tempt with flies or worm but they are there.  One fish reported for the week.

The water is nice but a bit on the low side for good salmon fly fishing.

Some lovely brown trout showing and even taking salmon flies in the evenings.

Prospects: It can only get better – even allowing for the draft nets being in operation,  the return to anglers for this past week was not great.

Fly proves deadly for pollack at Cork Harbour

pollack

Despite the closed season for bass , Eire Bass  guide Richie Ryan continues to have success  fly fishing in deep water with clients catching pollack on his favourite marks. Two Dublin based anglers returned to fish the fly with the guide again this year and had fish on practically every cast.

pollack

Richie tells us of a recent outing with group  of Dutch anglers who had booked a session aboard his boat Sea Hawk. Having been out fishing pollack himself on the fly the previous day on a good mark, the guide decided to take the tourists to the same location. The  three anglers were using traditional  spinning rods and reels and a variety of lures. The tidal and weather conditions were exactly the same as the previous day but no hook ups. None of the anglers knew how to fly fish but keen to show the anglers the fish were there Richie decided to cast a fly allowing each of them in turn to retrieve. Again the fly returned a fish per cast whilst the other methods caught nothing! Only after an hour or so had passed and the currents changed did the spinning rods start to pick up fish and  to Richie’s delight, all rods were bending with pollack . It just shows how effective the fly can be when other methods are not working.

Some great haddock to over 6lb are being caught regularly

Never before have I seen such large numbers of big whiting. Lots of large  Pollack also.  Mackerel are very plentiful thankfully.

Tope move into the Shannon Estuary as fishing continues to improve

tope
The first Clare coast tope of 2014

Luke Aston reports from Carrigaholt where the tope have made their first appearance of the year…

I suppose the highlight of this report is that we have caught the first Tope of our season here in the Shannon estuary. I don’t normally start to target them until mid June but I had noticed last year that there seemed to be lots of them about by then so I decided to give it a go earlier this year. On a quick trip on a foggy morning I had a good 32lb female to the boat.

tope
The first Clare coast tope of 2014

Overall the fishing has been going very good although disrupted a bit by the weather over the last few days. There seem to be lots of mixed Whitefish about, with around 400kg of fish to the boat on the best day. Mostly Pollack and Coalfish but also a nice sign of Cod and Ling.

Ling
Ling caught on spinning gear can give great sport

Drifting out on some stony ground was turning up some fine Whiting of over 2.5lbs. As the season goes on these will turn into fine fish.

The Ling in the picture was caught on a Salmon spinning rod which a lad brought out to try. He was using one of my 4oz lead heads and had great fun with a fish on every cast!
