Costello and Fermoyle is a sea trout and salmon fishery, featured extensively in “A Man May Fish” by T.C. Kingsmill Moore, one of the foremost experts on sea trout fishing and creator of the Bumble type flies. The fishery comprises the Casla River and a series of lakes, set in beautiful scenery against the backdrop of the Twelve Pins mountains. The fishery is quite extensive, from lakes draining the hills near Oughterard to the sea at Casla. The river is about 4 miles long, divided into 4 beats, easily fished from both banks. The main lakes are Glenicmurrin, Fermoyle, Clogher, and the Schoolhouse Loughs. Boats or fishing stands are provided at all of these. Guided fishing is available, the number of rods is strictly limited, and beats are rotated. Flyfishing only, and no petrol outboards are allowed. The fishing is privately owned by Costello and Fermoyle Fisheries, and visitor permits are available.

    Salmon

A few spring salmon enter the fishery from March, with grilse starting to run in June. The salmon fishing is best in July, and it fishes best after a flood.

    Sea Trout

This fishery was once renowned for the quality of its sea trout fishing, and indeed features heavily in Kingsmill Moore’s writings on sea trout. As with other fisheries in Connemara it was badly hit by sea lice and salmon farming, but the resurgence in stocks in the last few years has been very strong and extremely encouraging. Sea trout run the river on any flood from June on, and provide excellent sport on the lakes until the end of the season. Current legislation requires that all sea trout are released alive.

    Season

    • Sea trout: 1 June to 30 September
