    The Shannon Regional Fisheries Board coastal boundaries extend from Hags Head on the Co Clare Coast, and includes all of the Shannon Estuary to Limerick on the north side of the river, to Kerry head on the south side of the river. See map The region’s scenic and rugged coastline offers exceptional shore angling. There are 40 shore angling marks where excellent Ballan Wrasse can be taken as well as Mackerel, Pollack, Dogfish, Bull Huss, Ling and Conger. The current Irish record Bass of 17lbs 13ozs was landed at Doughmore strand near Doonbeg Co Clare on the 21st October 2000. There are many piers along our coastline with miles of sandy beaches to tempt you. Good sign posting to the popular angling marks, will assist locating fishing spots.     SOUTH CLARE AND THE SHANNON ESTUARY

    Deep Sea Angling: Charter boats operating out of Kilrush, Killbaha and Carrigaholt have excellent inshore fishing in the Shannon Estuary for tope, bull huss, dogfish, thornback ray, conger, rockling and flatfish.  Deep sea angling  catches of blue shark, ling, pollack, coalfish, gurnard, etc off Loop Head.

    Shore Fishing: Shore marks have produced ray, bull huss and some tope.  Good surf beaches on the west coastline producing bass, ray and flatfish.  The Irish record bass was caught on Doughhmore strand in 2000 weighing 17 lb. 13 oz.

    Small Boat: An excellent centre for small boats with several slipways on both sides of the estuary.  Small boat fishing is available from Carrigaholt to Killadysert for thornback ray, bull huss, dogfish, conger, pollack and rockling.

    When to Fish: June to September for tope. July to September for blue shark.  Thornback ray and bull huss taken all year round. Bass and flounder September to December.

    Comments: An ideal venue for large and small boats providing consistent catches of tope in season.  One of the few places in Ireland where tope are caught from the shore.  Ray and huss are also caught from selected shore marks.
