Killarney Lakes and the River Laune

    Killarney, Killorglin, Co. Kerry

The lakes and rivers of this system have very good populations of reasonably sized (0.75 lbs.) brown trout that readily take a fly. Large ferox brown trout can be caught on Lough Leane (4,500 acres; 1,823 hectares) by trolling large artificial baits. This big lake provides the better trout fishing with good hatches of olives and chironomids, sedges and various terrestrial flies during the season. Access is good throughout and boats and guides are available. Fishing on the lakes is free. A permit is required for the different stretches along the River Laune. O’Neills tackle shop in Killarney can provide permits and all other services for this system. The season runs from 15th of February to 12th of October. All legitimate angling methods. Best Times: April – September.
