Michael Flanagan, Angling Guide and Reporter reports on the Philip Moffat Memorial Cup:

Last Sunday November 17th we lashed out from Donore Shore on Derravaragh for the Annual Christmas Pike competition. Also up for grabs was the Philip Moffat Memorial Cup.  Sadly some years back Philip and some friends lost their lives in a drowning tragedy on the Lake.  I grew up with Philip & the Moffat family here in Springfield, and always try my best to make this memorial competition. It was a brutal wet day on the lake, and the heavy mist never really lifted, so it was tough going.

On the day some cracking pike took the bait with local pike Angler Barry Darby having a fantastic day, boating 9 pike best of 13lbs 6oz to take Top Rod. Longford piker Joe McDermott rattled the scales with a pike of 12lbs 6oz to take 2nd spot, and Derravaragh club member Bogen Golebiewski landed a fine pike of 9lbs 2oz to take 3rd spot. Eleven prizes were presented in the senior section, and Paddy Hannon of Collinstown, John Flanagan Mullingar, Conor Hannon Athlone, also featured in the prizes.

It was certainly Ladies day in the Junior section as Darian Corcoran was crowned Top Rod, and her sister Alanis was 2nd, with April Flanagan 3rd. Presentation took place back at Weirs Lounge Multyfarnham, and Tanya Breslin daughter of the late Philip presented all winners on the day with their prizes. Joe Keena of Derravaragh Anglers thanked all who fished and supported Derravaragh Anglers in 2013, and hope to see you all in the New Year.
