    The rudd, gold scaled and red finned, is one of the most striking native Irish fish. It thrives in the crystalline loughs of Co. Roscommon and the lakes on the river of the River Fergus at Corofin, Co. Clare. After a decline for some years, rudd have made a comeback on some waters particularly on some of the midland canal stretches. Record Weight: 4 lbs. 8 oz (2.041 Kilos) at Coney Lake, Tulsk, Co. Roscommon in 1996. Specimen Weight: 1,021 kg. (2 lbs. 4 oz.).

    Best times to fish: June to August with best fishing in warm calm weather.

    Some of the best rudd waters in Ireland: Annaghmore Lake and other lakes near Strokestown, Co. Roscommon: the “Coney” series of small lakes and Lough Patrick near Tulsk in Co. Roscommon; Ballycullinan, Atedaun and Dromore lakes on the Fergus system near Corofin, Co. Clare and the Royal Canal at Mullingar, Co. Westmeath.
