    River Fergus

    With a limestone base this small to medium sized river produces nice brown trout fishing with fish averaging about 1lb. Many fish of over 2lbs are caught each year. Fishing on the river is free and there are hatches of various olives, mayflies and sedges and dry fly is very productive. All legitimate angling methods. The season runs from 15th of February to 30th of September. Best Times: April – September.

    Camcor River

    Birr, Co. Offaly

    Great run of “Croneen” trout from Lough Derg particularly from mid July to September depending on water levels. There is also good trout fishing though a little smaller during the rest of the season. There are good hatches of olives, midges, and sedges. Fly fishing only. The season runs from 1st of March to 30th of September. The best period is usually between June
    and September.

    Lough Derg

    Killaloe, Scarriff, Co. Clare and Garrykennedy, Dromineer, Co. Tipperary

    Lough Derg is a large lake, 32,123 acres; 13,000 hectares, over 18 miles (30 km) in length and is regarded as a mixed fishery. It does produce very good trout fishing on this, the biggest of the Shannon lakes, with excellent mayfly and sedge fishing as well as some good duckfly early in the season. The lower half of the lake towards Killaloe tends to be the better end of the lake for brown trout fishing. Free fishing and all legitimate angling methods allowed. A 14 inch (35.56 cms) size limit is now in force and trout smaller than this must be returned alive. Good network of boat hire and guide service available on the lake. There are a number of marinas on the shores with slipways.

    The season runs from the March 15th – September 30th. Fishes well all season.

    Lough Ree

    Athlone, Ballykeeran, Co. Westmeath and Knockcroghery, Co. Roscommon

    Very good trout fishing with excellent mayfly and sedge fishing on this big lake (25,946 acres; 10,500 hectares) which is also a mixed fishery. There is a lot of cruiser traffic on this lake and many marinas and slipways. Most of the trout fishing is near many of the islands away from main navigation channels. Free fishing and all legitimate angling methods allowed. Trout size and bag limit: 14 inches or greater and there is a limit of 4 trout per day.

    The season runs from the 1st of March to the 30th of September.

    Lough Ennell

    Mullingar, Co. Westmeath

    Good trout fishing with good hatches of buzzers, mayfly and sedges, but can be difficult to rise trout at times. The season runs from 1st of March to 12th of October. A Midland Fisheries Group permit is required and can be purchased online. (3,540 acres 1,434; hectares)

    Best Times: April – 12th of October with very good fishing in the last two weeks of the season.

    Lough Owel

    Mullingar, Co. Westmeath

    Good trout fishing with the best periods in April and during the Green Peter in July and in the last few weeks of the season. Midland Fisheries Group Permit required. This can be bought online.

    The season runs from 1st of March to the 12th of October. All legitimate angling methods allowed. (2,547 acres; 1,032 hectares).

    Lough Sheelin

    Finea, Co. Westmeath and Crover, Mount Nugent, Co. Cavan

    Small stock of big trout with good mayfly and good evening sedge fishing during the summer months. The season runs from 1st of March to 12th of October.

    Best times: April – 12th of October. All legitimate angling methods allowed.

    A Midland Fisheries Group permit is required and is available online. (4,000 acres; 1,620 hectares).

    Lough O’Flynn

    Ballinlough and Castlerea, Co. Roscommon

    Good trout fishing with good mayfly, olive and sedge fishing. Very consistent fishing throughout the season. The season runs from 1st of March to 12th of October.

    Best Times: April – 12th of October.

    Fly fishing, dapping, spinning or trolling under oars (only).
