Hamish Currie, skipper of the Predator II out of Red Bay reports on the local fishing…
As I said quite some time ago mackerel are a real nightmare to catch right now. We struggle just to get enough for a day’s fishing and as we all know its down to the commercial pressure – more on that below…
Last week a group from Cornwall and Weymouth were over and had some nice mixed fishing over the course of the week. It’s their third trip to Red Bay and they enjoyed some really nice weather and angling as well.
Shark will be on the menu in the coming months and of course it will be the porbeagle shark they target but last year I saw 2 Mako shark breaching on the same grounds. It would be nice to nail one of them! Time will tell I suppose.
As I said above mackerel are a real nightmare to catch right now. It’s down to the commercial pressure – over 100,000 tons were taken over the winter by you know who and that’s not counting the 150 ton per week taken from the east coast of Scotland at Peterhead. So in my opinion the long term future of the humble mackerel is and will be the same over the years as the cod’s, which has declined drastically. How disappointing.
