Irish Daily Star Journalist and angling correspondent David Gray reports:
Dublin Pike Anglers chairman Dave Moody from Clondalkin was crowned champion club angler following the final leg of the club’s winter league at Garty Lake, Co.Cavan.
While the club chairman didn’t figure in the top three last Sunday, his final tally of 48 points was not to be beaten.
Dave attributed his success to 10.75 lbs pike caught during the second leg on the River Barrow in December.
“The river was very high so I found a backwater with not much current and cast out a large trout”, he recalled. “The bait only hit the bottom when the line went tight so I gave a firm strike and all hell broke loose. Luckily my fish was winner on the day giving me a well needed 17 points,” he added.
The biggest fish recorded during the league was Anthony Quinn’s 17.31 pounder.

Thirteen ladies from all around the country turned out at last weekend’s National Ladies Shore Angling Championships in Co. Wexford.
They fished at Ballinoulart on Saturday morning and Morriscastle on Saturday night. Then on to Ballinesker on Sunday Morning.
The Saturday evening session, 6.00 to 10.00 pm on Morriscastle, produced the most fish. Over the three sessions a total 87 measurable fish were caught and returned. The top five (see below) will now represent their country against the English and Welsh ladies’ teams in Wales in July.
A plethora of angling guides and books have been launched in recent weeks. Amongst those sent to me were Kevin Crowley and Shane O’Reilly’s West of Ireland Sea Angling Guide covering Clew Bay to North Clare. This useful guide is free of charge and anyone can request a copy by emailing their details to [email protected]
* Marty O’Hara, Tempo, Enniskillen caught a super salmon weighing 17.5 lbs in the River Drowes, Co.Leitrim last week. The fish came to a yellow belly Devon minnow in Briney’s Pool.
